How it works
From a first call to signed papers, in six steps
Most plans take three to five weeks from the first call. You can do every step except the signing from home.
- 01
Step 1: The 20-minute call
Twenty minutes by video or phone. You tell us about your family, we tell you which plan fits and email the flat fee.
- 02
Step 2: A questionnaire
Plain questions about your family, your home and your accounts. Most people finish it in an evening.
- 03
Step 3: A planning meeting
An hour by video with your lawyer to make the choices: who’s in charge, who receives what, and when.
- 04
Step 4: Plain-English drafts
Your documents and a one-page summary, in plain English. We change them until they say what you mean.
- 05
Step 5: Sign with a notary in the room
In our office on Third Avenue North, or at a signing we arrange closer to home, with witnesses and a notary.
- 06
Step 6: Keeping the plan
Your originals, a digital copy and, with a trust, a call about moving your accounts into it.
Meeting by video
What do we need for a video meeting?
A phone, tablet or computer with a camera. We send a link; there’s nothing to install.
Can my parent join from a care home?
Yes. Staff can often help set up the call, and we can mail papers to read ahead of time.
Can family in other states join?
Yes, as long as the person making the plan wants them there. We may ask to speak with them alone for part of the call.
Why can’t we sign by video too?
Wills and some other papers need witnesses and a notary in the room. We arrange that at our office or nearer you.
