Special needs trusts

Special needs trusts for a son or daughter who will need help

A special needs trust holds money for someone with a disability. Because the trust owns it, not your child, it doesn’t count against benefits such as Supplemental Security Income or Medical Assistance.

Parents usually come to us when they make their own wills and realize an inheritance could cost their child the benefits they rely on. The trust sits inside your plan and receives that share instead.

We also help you write a letter of intent: what your son or daughter likes, who their doctors are, what calms them down. It isn’t a legal document, and it’s often the one families say they value most.

Who runs the trust

You name a trustee, often a sibling, to spend from the trust on things that make life better: a phone, classes, trips, a better wheelchair. We meet with that person too, so they know the rules before it’s their job.

What the plan includes

A lower flat fee when it's added to a will or trust plan, and a flat fee of its own when it stands alone.

  • The trust itself

Written so the money supports your child without replacing their benefits.

  • Letter of intent, in your words

A guide for whoever takes over, in your words.

  • A trustee meeting

A video call with the person you name, on what the trust can and can’t pay for.

What parents ask about special needs trusts

Can grandparents leave money to the trust?

Yes. Anyone can name the trust in their will or on a beneficiary form. We give you the wording to share with them.

What if our child is already an adult?

The trust works the same. If your adult child needs help making decisions, we can talk through powers of attorney and other options on the first call.

Do we need a trust if the inheritance is small?

Often yes, because a small amount can still be enough to pause benefits. We’ll tell you on the first call if it isn’t worth the fee.

Plan for your child’s future

Tell us about your family and the benefits your child receives. We’ll explain the options and quote the fee.
